Andrea Duran Named UCLA/MET-Rx Student-Athlete of the Week
April 10, 2006
Senior third baseman Andrea Duran (Selma, CA/Selma HS) of the UCLA Softball team was selected as the UCLA/MET-Rx Student-Athlete of the Week (Apr. 4-9).
Duran hit .545 for the weekend, going 6-for-11 with five runs scored, a double, three home runs, four RBI and a 1.455 slugging percentage. She was perfect defensively on eight chances. Duran led off Friday's game against No. 9/8 Arizona State by putting a full-count pitch over the left field fence for her eighth home run of the season. She homered for a second time against the Sun Devils with a two-run shot in the fourth inning. On Saturday night at No. 2/3 Arizona, Duran led off the game with a double and scored UCLA's first run of the night in the 2-1 victory. Sunday's game started the same way as Friday night's win at ASU, with Duran putting the second pitch of the game off the top of the batter's eye in dead centerfield. She led off the third inning with a single and came around to score. She was intentionally walked to load the bases in the fourth inning and singled to lead off the sixth in UCLA's 8-3 win over the Wildcats.
UCLA's two victories over Arizona this past weekend were the Wildcats' first home losses of the 2006 season. The Bruins, who are alone in first place in the Pac-10 standings after two weekends of play, swept the Arizona schools on the road last weekend.
This is Duran's first UCLA/MET-Rx Student-Athlete of the Week honor of the season and of her career.
