No. 20 USC Slams Way To 17-9 Defeat Over UC Riverside

LOS ANGELES --- Shortstop Hector Estrella (Rosemead/Northview HS) extended his season-high hitting streak to 12 games Tuesday with a 2-for-5 day, including a grand slam, as the No. 20 USC Trojans defeated the UC Riverside Highlanders, 17-9, in non conference action.
Estrella hit one of three home runs in the game for USC with his second homer of the season, capping a five-run third inning. Junior outfielder Cyle Hankerd (Covina/South Hills HS) hit his sixth of the season in a 3-for-5 performance with three RBI while junior outfielder Daniel Perales (Orange/Mater Dei HS) went 4-for-5 with his fourth home run and three RBI.
USC pounded out 19 hits to improve to 21-14 on the season, dropping UC Riverside to 18-13.
Shawn Olsen (4-2) earned the win for USC, allowing just one run (unearned) on two hits in three innings of work.
UCR was led by Brett Bigler, who went 2-for-3 with a double and two RBI, and Aaron Wible, who had a double and three RBI.
The Highlanders scored a run in the first before the Trojans exploded for 12 unanswered runs in four innings. UC Riverside rallied with eight unanswered runs of its own, but USC put the game away with five runs in the bottom of the seventh.
USC, currently in first place in the Pac-10 Conference, travels to second-place Arizona State for a key series, Thursday-Saturday (April 13-15). The Sun Devils are 1 1/2 games back of the Trojans.
Game times are 7 p.m. on Thursday and Friday with a 1 p.m. start on Saturday. All three games will be broadcast live on usctrojans.com
