Washington's Zach Clem and Tim Lincecum Named Pac-10 Baseball Player and Pitcher of the Week
April 11, 2006
WALNUT CREEK, Calif. - WASHINGTON senior left fielder Zach Clem and junior right-handed pitcher Tim Lincecum have been named the Pacific-10 Conference Baseball Player and Pitcher of the Week, respectively, for Apr. 4 - 10, Commissioner Tom Hansen announced today.
Clem, from Burlington, Wash., added four home runs last week to his league-leading 14 so far this season. On Tuesday, the senior became only the fourth Husky on record to hit three homers in a game. In Sunday's extra-innings loss at No. 13 Arizona State, he turned in two spectacular catches in left field, including one that saw him do a complete flip over a fence in foul territory, after making a catch on a full sprint. For the week, Clem went 8-for-17 (.471) with a double, four home runs, five RBI and seven runs scored.
Lincecum, from Renton, Wash., threw his second consecutive two-hit shutout on Friday in Tempe, extending his streak of consecutive shutout innings to 28 2/3. In the 8-0 victory, Lincecum walked four and struck out 12. In Tuesday's 11-10 win over Portland, the junior recorded his first career save, coming on in the ninth and throwing a 1-2-3 inning, striking out two. On Sunday, Lincecum reached 100 strikeouts for the third straight season. The right-hander is only the fifth Husky to reach 100 strikeouts in a season and now has 401 in his career, which makes him only the third Pac-10 pitcher to reach such a feat.
The Player of the Week honor is the third of Clem's career, his first since 2004, while it is the 51st such honor for Washington. The Pitcher of the Week honor is the seventh for Lincecum since 2004 and the school's 36th selection all-time. Lincecum, who now owns more weekly honors than any other Pac-10 pitcher all-time, is also the first pitcher to be named Conference Pitcher of the Week in three consecutive weeks since USC's Mark Prior earned three straight awards April 16 - 30, 2001. Washington is the first Pac-10 team to sweep the Conference's weekly honors since Arizona State's Dustin Pedroia and Jason Uriquidez on Feb. 24, 2004.
