SEATTLE- Washington senior Jessica Veris has been selected to participate in the first ever Collegiate Beach Volleyball National Championship in Reno, Nev. as part of the CSTV Collegiate Nationals. Of the 30 college seniors who participated, Veris was one of eight selected to compete in the National Championship. The event will take place on April 21 and 22 with the winner being named Beach Volleyball National Champion and given a spot on the AVP tour.
In addition to beach volleyball, the CSTV Collegiate Nationals will include nearly 1000 other college athletes competing in Snowboarding, Wakeboarding, Boxing, Whitewater Kayaking, and Triathlon.
The eight women selected to compete in beach volleyball were paired off and divided into four teams. Veris has been partnered with Lauren Brewster a middle blocker from Notre Dame. Joining Veris and Brewster are pairs Bibiana Candelas (USC) and Paula Gentil (Minnesota), Jennifer Abernathy (Arizona) and Victoria Prince (Hawaii) and Allie Griffin (Colorado) and Rachel Wagener (Maryland).
CSTV, in conjunction with the AVP, will be filming the event for a future reality television series. The crew began shooting footage during the initial selection process last month.
The Beach Volleyball National Championship will take place at Harrah's Plaza in downtown Reno. The event will be free and open to the public.
Washington already has one former athlete competing in the AVP tour. Makare Wilson, formally Makare Diesilets, played at Washington from 1994-97 where she earned All-American honors. Wilson, who still holds the UW career blocks record, joined the tour in 2004. She and partner Tyra Turner finished as the fourth ranked team on the tour in 2005.
