Top-Ranked Stanford Looks to Break Its Own Mark in Arizona

Stanford, Calif. - Top-ranked Stanford (20-0, 5-0 Pac-10) will travel south this weekend to take on No. 30 Arizona (12-8, 3-2 Pac-10) and No. 18 Arizona State (12-6, 3-2 Pac-10). The Cardinal will be looking to break its own record this weekend, as Stanford seeks its 77th and 78th consecutive wins, dating back to the beginning of the 2004 season.
From 1988-91, the Stanford women's tennis program won a school record 76-straight matches, a feat duplicated by the Cardinal program from 2004 through the present. With the Cardinal and the Wildcats will facing off on Friday at 1:30 p.m., Stanford has a chance to extend the streak and set a new school record.
On Saturday, the Cardinal will then head to Tempe to take on the Sun Devils at noon, as Stanford takes aim at its 19th straight Pac-10 title, which the Cardinal could clinch a share of with a pair of wins this weekend.
Stanford and the Arizona schools will play their Pac-10 conference matches, the Cardinal defeated both the Wildcats and the Sun Devils earlier this season in non-league action in Palo Alto.
In 46 meetings, Stanford has defeated Arizona 45 times. The Wildcats only win over the Cardinal in series history was on Feb. 21, 1987. Earlier this season, Stanford posted a 7-0 victory over Arizona on March 4.
The Cardinal defeated the Sun Devils, 4-0, in a rain-shortened match on March 3 at the Taube Tennis Center.
