April 14, 2006
Eugene, Ore. - The seventh-ranked UCLA men's tennis team further extended its lead in Pac-10 Conference play Friday afternoon, posting a 7-0 decision over the University of Oregon at the Student Tennis Center in Eugene. With the win, the Bruins improve to 16-4 overall and 5-0 in the Pac-10. The Ducks fall to 6-14 overall and 0-5 in league play.
The Bruins, who have won five straight, started Friday's match by claiming the doubles point following victories on court Nos. 1 and 3. UCLA's Philipp Gruendler and Benjamin Kohlloeffel won their 18th-consecutive match at the No. 1 position, as the third-ranked duo defeated Oregon's Thomas Bieri/Gustavo Loza, 8-6.
The Bruins dominated singles play, positing straight-set victories on five of six courts. After Gruendler (court No. 4) and Kohlloeffel (court No. 1) finished off their singles opponents, Bruin freshman Haythem Abid clinched the match for UCLA at court No. 2, recording a 6-2, 6-4 decision over Bieri. Abid's victory was followed up by wins from Mathieu Dehaine (court No. 3), Chris Surapol (court No. 5) and Michael Look (court No. 6), giving UCLA the 7-0 victory.
The weekend is expected to get much tougher for UCLA, as the Bruins travel to Seattle tomorrow for a 1:00 p.m. showdown with No. 20 Washington. A victory Saturday will guarantee UCLA at least a share of the 2006 Pac-10 title, its third in a row.
