Stanford Falls To Cal, 8-0, In Series Opener

Berkeley, Calif. - No. 8/9 Stanford Softball (29-8, 3-4) fell to No. 5 California (36-4, 5-1) today, 8-0, in the first of three games against the Bears this weekend. Cal scored six runs off of six hits in the bottom of the fourth inning to claim the win.
In the top of the third inning, senior catcher Lauren Lappin was walked on base and later stole second. Freshman shortstop Maddy Coon was also walked on base and Lappin advanced to third on a passed ball, but the Cardinal hitters couldn't bring them home.
The Bears' Haley Woods hit a single to left field in the bottom of the fourth inning to get on base. Emily Friedman knocked a base hit to center field and Alex Sutton reached on a fielder's choice. Katie Vickers was then walked on base to score Woods for the 1-0 Cal lead. Carly Winger followed with a single to the short stop, scoring Friedman, while Sutton came home on an error. Julie Meyer then reached on a fielder's choice, advancing to second base, and Vickers scored on catcher interferance between third base and home plate. Gina Leomiti knocked a sacrifice fly out to right field to bring home Winger. Morgan Siegel hit a single up the middle to score Meyer and Cal pushed ahead, 6-0.
In the bottom of the fifth inning, Friedman reached with a single to center field for the Bears and advanced to second base. Jessica Moore entered the game to pinch run for Friedman and later took third base on a sacrifice bunt by Vickers. Winger then knocked a sacrifice fly out to center field, scoring Moore on the throw for the 7-0 Cal lead.
Coon singled to get on base for Stanford in the sixth inning, but the Cardinal came away runless. In the bottom of the sixth, Cal's Meyer hit a single to shortstop and advanced to second as Leomiti was walked. Meyer came home off of a double by Siegel to center field. The Bears ended the game in the bottom of the sixth inning for an 8-0 victory.
Stanford hosts California tomorrow in a doubleheader beginning at 1:00 pm. The first game of the doubleheader will be broadcast live on Comcast Sports Net.
