No. 5 Cal Falls to No. 6/7 Stanford in Nine Innings

PALO ALTO - In game one of Saturday's doubleheader, the No. 5 California softball team fell to No. 6/7 Stanford 2-1 in nine innings. The second game started at 3:30 p.m.

The Golden Bears (36-5 overall, 5-2 Pac-10) took a 1-0 lead in the sixth inning when sophomore Katie Vickers hit an RBI double to right field, sending senior Emily Friedman home. Friedman knocked a single up the middle to reach base.

Stanford (30-8, 4-4) tied up the game in the bottom of the seventh on an RBI double from Catalina Morris. The Cardinal ended the game on an RBI single by Anna Beardman in the bottom of the ninth.

Senior Kristina Thorson (26-4) threw a solid game for the Bears, going 8.1 innings. She struck out 10 batters in the game and suffered just her fourth loss of the season.

The Bears travel to Santa Clara Wednesday for a doubleheader against the Broncos. The first game is scheduled for 3 p.m. Cal then hosts Arizona State and Arizona next weekend. The Bears host Arizona State Friday at 3 p.m. Arizona visits Berkeley for a two-game series, playing Saturday and Sunday at 1 p.m.
