Stanford Downs Cal, 4-2, For Second Win Of The Day

Stanford, Calif. - No. 6/7 Stanford Softball (31-8, 5-4) upset No. 5 California (36-6, 5-3), 4-2, for the second time today. The Bears took an early lead, but the Cardinal moved ahead in the bottom of the third inning to claim the victory. Sophomore pitcher Becky McCullough struck out five batters in seven innings to improve to 8-4 this year.

With the Golden Bears at bat to start the game, Morgon Siegel knocked a double down the left line to get on base and Lindsay James was walked. Haley Woods laid down a sacrifice bunt to advance both runners. Siegel scored on the next at-bat to put Cal in the lead, 1-0.

In the bottom of the first inning, senior infielder Lauren Lappin got on base with a single to left field. Freshman infielder Maddy Coon was walked on base and sophomore Michelle Smith was hit by a pitch to load the bases. Freshman Missy Penna reached on a fielder's choice, but Lappin was out at home plate. Sophomore infielder Erin Howe made it to first base on an error by the shortstop and Coon came home for the first Cardinal run of the game.

Lappin laid down a bunt to get on base in the bottom of the third inning. Coon was walked on base and Lauren Frankiewicz entered the game to pitch for the Bears. Smith was hit by a pitch to load the bases. Howe then knocked a single to centerfield, bringing home both Lappin and Coon for the 3-1 Cardinal lead. Junior outfielder Jackie Rinehart was walked to load the bases again, but Frankiewicz struck out two batters to end the inning.

In the bottom of the fifth inning, Howe was walked on base. Rinehart reached on a fielder's choice as Howe beat out the throw at second base. Sophomore infielder Tricia Aggabao advanced both runners with a sacrifice bunt. Junior outfielder Anna Beardman then knocked a single past the shortstop to score Howe. After five complete innings, Stanford led, 4-1.

Emily Friedman hit a home run just over the left field fence in the top of the sixth inning for the second California run of the game. In the top of the seventh inning, Gina Leomiti reached on an error for the Bears. Siegel was then walked and Lindsay James hit a single up the middle to load the bases. Lappin threw out Woods at first base to end the inning for a 4-2 Cardinal victory.

McCullough struck out five batters, walked three and allowed five hits in seven innings. Starter Jessica Moore took the loss for the Bears and moves to 0-1 on the season. Howe was 1-3 at the plate with one run, three RBI and a walk. Coon tallied two runs for the Cardinal and Beardman collected one RBI.

In three games this weekend against the Golden Bears, Morris hit .455 with a double and one RBI. McCullough and senior pitcher Laura Severson grabbed one win each versus Cal.

Stanford hosts St. Mary's on Wednesday, April 19 (7:00 pm) before playing Arizona and Arizona State at home on April 21-23.
