Washington Fourth at U.S. Intercollegiate

April 15, 2006

Stanford, Calif. - The 31st-ranked Washington men's golf team shot 292 and 291 in the first and second rounds at the U.S. Intercollegiate, placing the Huskies fourth at 23-over 583 headed into the final round. UCLA has the team lead at 18-over 578. USC is one stroke back at 19-over 579.

'The rough on the course was six-to-eight inches tall,' said Washington head coach Matt Thurmond, explaining the relatively high scores on the day. 'It was as high as I've ever seen it during competition. In the rough you couldn't see the ball until you were on top of it.'

Alex Prugh rebounded from a first-round 76 to shoot a 4-under 66 in round two despite the high rough. His two-round total of 2-over 142 led the Huskies. Overall individual standings were unavailable as of this release.

Erik Olson shot rounds of 73 and 72 to hold down second position for Washington at 5-over 145. James Lepp was a stroke behind him after shooting 72 and 74 in rounds one and two. Sterling Clark's 71 led the Dawgs in round one. The sophomore shot 79 in the second round, giving him a 150 on the day. Freshman John Wise, playing in his second varsity tournament as a Husky, shot rounds of 78 and 79 for a composite score of 157.

The third and final round of the U.S. Intercollegiate begins tomorrow at 8 a.m. Live scoring of the round is available at golfstat.com.
