Williams Ties His School High Jump Record And Freberg Sets Shot Record At Mt. SAC Relays

Senior Jesse Williams tied his school record in winning the men's high jump and senior Karen Freberg set the school record in winning the women's shot put today (April 15) in the final day of competition at the Mt. SAC Relays held at Hilmer Lodge Stadium in Walnut, Calif.
Williams, who is the defending NCAA champion in the high jump and has won the last two NCAA indoor championships in the high jump, cleared a height of 7-6 ½ (2.30m) to win the men's invitational high jump competition and tie his school record. Williams originally set the record on July 26, 2005 at the DN Galan Track and Field Championships in Stockholm, Sweden.
Freberg, a transfer from Florida, set the USC female shot put record and established a new personal best with a throw of 56-5 3/4 (17.21m) to finish third in the women's invitational competition. Freberg replaces L'Orangerie Crawford on the top of the Trojan women's shot put chart, who had a shot put of 56-3 1/4 (17.15m).
Senior Virginia Powell did not disappoint, winning the women's invitational 100m HH event with a season-best wind-aided time of 12.68. She now owns a 0.3 second lead over the next fastest female college 100m hurdler time this season of 12.98, posted by Priscilla Lopes of Nebraska. Junior Candice Davis ran a season-best wind-aided time of 13.05 to finish third.
Junior Carol Rodriguez also had a big day on the track, winning the women's 100m dash invitational with a time of 11.40. Sophomore teammate Jessica Onyepunuka came in second with a season-best time of 11.50. Rodriguez also placed fourth in the women's 200m invitational with a personal-best time of 23.13, the third-fastest time posted by a college female runner this season. She finished 0.01 behind former UCLA All-American Monique Henderson, who won last year's Pac-10 championship in the event.
Seniors Garry Jones and Philip Francis finished second and third respectively in the men's Olympic development 100m dash. Jones ran 10.38 to tie his season and career-best time and Francis ran 10.39 to establish his season's best mark.
In the men's invitational 400m race, sophomore Lionel Larry won the event with a time of 46.11. He already has the seventh fastest time by a college male runner this season with a time of 46.07. Larry won the event over Andrae Williams of Texas Tech who placed second with a time of 46.14 and former Trojan great and Olympic 400m IH hero Felix Sanchez, who came in third with a time of 46.19.
Junior Raphael Asafo-Agyei ran a season-best 1:48.56 in the men's invitational 800m race to finish eighth. He now has the third-fastest time in the 800m race by a male college athlete this season. Sophomore Duane Solomon placed sixth in the Olympic development 800m race with a time of 1:52.12.
Junior Adam Midles had a career-best hammer throw of 216-1 (65.86m) to place seventh in the men's hammer invitational. Midles improved his seventh-place standing on the USC hammer throw list by one inch. Junior Julia Rozenfeld placed 11th in the women's invitational hammer competition with a throw of 191-7 (58.39m).
Also competing today for the Trojans were junior Noah Bryant who placed ninth in the men's invitational shot put competition with a throw of 61-7 (18.77m), junior William Denbo who came in second in the Olympic development shot competition with a distance of 56-8 1/2 (17.28m) and sophomore Kai Kelley who placed fifth in the men's Olympic development 110m HH with a time of 14.25.
On April 14 in University/Open events at Mt. SAC, Kelley placed second in the men's 400m IH with a time of 52.77, sophomore Logan Taylor played third in the men's 110 HH with a time of 15.07, senior Tomasz Babiszkiewicz placed 12th in the men's 1500m run with a time of 3:46.81, junior Whitney Graham placed fifth in the women's 200m race (season-best 24.93) and 16th in the 100m dash (12.29), senior Tunisia Johnson fifth in the women's 400m IH (1:02.10), sophomore Talia Stewart sixth in the women's 400m IH (1:02.29) and Freberg came in 18th in the hammer (130-2/39.69m).
At the Long Beach Invitational on April 14, junior Kristen Berglas ran a season-best 4:53.03 in the women's 1500m to finish ninth. Other USC females competing at Long Beach were freshman Katie Kirst in the 400m IH (10th, 1:07.13), junior Alexandrea Williams in the hammer (4th, 159-6/48.63m) and freshman Kenisha Strong in the pole vault (T-5th, 10-0 1/2).
For the USC men at Long Beach, freshmen Justin Lucas (17th, 50.41), Russell Ellis (23rd, 51.76) and Gavin Yates(25th, 52.35) all ran in the 400m race. Also, junior Chris Huddleston placed 15th in the 800m with a time of 2:00.59, junior Kevin Swartz ninth in the hammer throw (155-9) and senior Mark Sargeant ninth in the javelin throw (160-10).
