No. 8/9 Stanford Loses Seventh-Inning Heartbreaker to No. 3 Arizona, 3-2

Tucson, Ariz. - No. 8/9 Stanford Softball (35-14, 7-10) dropped a heartbreaking 3-2 game tonight to the third-ranked Arizona Wildcats (39-9, 10-6). Arizona scored first in the third inning with a sacrifice fly from Kristie Fox. The Cardinal took over the lead in the fourth inning when junior Lindsay Key hit a two-run home run. In the bottom of the seventh inning, Arizona brought in another run with a sacrifice fly and Fox doubled to bring in the game-winning run.
Freshman infielder Maddy Coon collected the Cardinal's first hit with a single to right field in the top of the second inning. Sophomore infielder Erin Howe moved Coon to second base with a sacrifice bunt, but the Cardinal hitters couldn't bring her home.
In the top of the third inning, sophomore infielder Tricia Aggabao hit a hard single to right field to get on base for the Cardinal. Junior outfielder Anna Beardman then reached on a fielder's choice, but Aggabao was out at second base on the play. Senior outfielder Catalina Morris knocked a base hit up the middle, advancing Beardman to second. Junior outfielder Jackie Rinehart also reached on a fielder's choice, advancing Morris to second, but Beardman was out at third on the force. Arizona's defense held the Cardinal runless in the third inning.
Adrienne Acton hit a single to left field for the Wildcats in the bottom of the third inning. Caitlin Lowe reached with a bunt, moving Acton to second base. Autumn Champion followed with another bunt to load the bases. Fox flied out to center field, but Acton came home for the first run of the game. With runners on second and third base, sophomore pitcher Becky McCullough struck out one batter and another flied out to end the inning with a 1-0 Arizona lead.
Coon hit her second single of the day up the middle to open the fourth inning. With two outs, Key slammed a home run over the center field fence to bring home Coon and put the Cardinal ahead, 2-1. Aggabao followed with a single to left field and later stole second base. After three and a half innings, Stanford led, 2-1.
McCullough struck out two batters in the bottom of the fourth to bring the Cardinal up to the plate. Senior infielder Lauren Lappin hit a single to shortstop to get on base in the top of the fifth inning and later stole second base. Coon was walked on base, but the inning ended runless for the Cardinal.
In the bottom of the seventh inning, Laine Roth hit a double to left field and Kelly Nelson entered the game to pinch run at second base. Acton moved Nelson to third base with a sacrifice hit. Lowe followed with a sacrifice fly to left field, bringing home Nelson for the tying run. Champion bunted to get on base, then Fox slammed a double to center field, bringing home Champion for the game-winning run. Arizona claimed the win, 3-2.
In seven innings, McCullough struck out five batters, walked none and allowed 10 hits. Arizona's Alicia Hollowell struck out six batters, walked two and allowed seven hits in seven innings.
Coon was 2-2 at the plate with one run and a walk, while Key was 1-3 with one run and two RBI.
Stanford will play one final game against the Wildcats tomorrow at 1:00 pm.
