Gomez Leads UW To 10-4 Win At Portland

May 16, 2006

PORTLAND, Ore. - Catcher Matt Lane broke a 4-4 tie with a sixth-inning, leadoff homer and freshman Adrian Gomez threw seven innings of shutout relief as the Washington baseball team snapped a four-game losing streak with a 6-4 win over Portland Tuesday at Joe Etzel Field.

Sophomore center fielder Michael Burgher had three hits, including an RBI triple for the Huskies while Curt Rindal hit his 10th homer of the year.

Gomez, who came on after the first five batters had reached base in the bottom of the first, picked up his first Husky win to improve to 1-1. The lefty from Battle Ground, Wash., allowed three hits and two walks while striking out four.

Washington improved to 33-23 with the win while the Pilots dropped to 15-34. Starter Sean Sargent (3-11) suffered the loss for the Pilots.

The Huskies got off to a quick start with two runs in the top of the first. After singles from Burgher and Matt Hague, Rindal looped a one-out single over third base to send home one run. After a second out, right fielder Cory Rickard singled to score Hague, making it 2-0.

Portland, however, came right back. After second baseman Sean Nicol led off the first with a homer to left, Cory Wiltshire lined a pitch to right that took a high hop over Rickard's head to the wall for a triple. Wiltshire scored on a wild pitch to tie the game at 2-2.

After a walk and a single put runners at first and second with no outs, Travis Vetters singled to left to drive in a run that put Portland on top, 3-2. Gomez came on in relief and got two outs, but UW third baseman Matt Stevens dropped a liner off the bat of Jesse Rodgers for an error, allowing a fourth run to score before the inning ended.

After going down in order in the second, third and fourth innings, the Huskies got back to work in the fifth. After singles from Stevens and Ryan Anderson, Burgher singled through the right side, driving in Stevens. The throw from the outfield got past catcher Nik Kosach and Anderson tried to score, but was thrown out at the plate on a throw from the pitcher, backing up the play. After a second out, Hague doubled to right-center, driving in Burgher to tie the score at 4-4.

Lane led off the sixth with his 11th homer of the year to break the tie. Rickard followed with a double and eventually scored on a Stevens single. In the eighth, the UW added four more in an inning highlighted by Burgher's RBI triple and a two-run homer from Rindal.

Friday through Sunday, the Huskies head to Stockton, Calif., to face Pacific in a three-game series. The UW closes out the 2006 regular season May 26-28 vs. Washington State at Husky Ballpark. Live audio of all six remaining games will be available on the 'Dawg Channel' at gohuskies.com.
