No. 25 Wichita State Rallies For 10-8 Series Sweep Against USC

May 21, 2006

WICHITA, Kansas - Brandon Hall's two-run, bases-loaded single capped a three-run eighth inning Sunday as the No. 25 Wichita State Shockers defeated the USC Trojans, 10-8, to earn the non conference series sweep. The Trojans scored five times in the first before the host Shockers chipped away for the eventual win.

Paul Koss (0-7) took the hard-luck loss for USC (25-29), but not without controversy. In the crucial eighth inning, Wichita State (43-18) loaded the bases down by a run with no outs off Koss. He then struck out Tyler Hill and Derek Schermerhorn before facing Brian Spear, who hit a two-run homer off Koss the inning before. In a 10-pitch at-bat, Koss threw a full-count pitch that was called a ball to tie the game at eight. Hall then hit Koss's first pitch into left for the game-winner.

USC must now win all four games next week in order to be considered for post-season play.

Koss went 3 1/3 innings, allowing five runs on four hits. Anthony Capra (2-2) threw 1 1/3 scoreless innings for the victory while Noah Krol earned his second save in as many days and fourth overall.

Baron Frost led the Trojans with a 3-for-5 day and stole home in the fifth for the Trojans' seventh run of the contest. It was the first time a Trojan had stolen home since Michael Moon did it on Feb. 14, 2003, against South Alabama.

Matt Brown went 3-for-4 with an RBI for the Shockers while Spear had three RBI on the afternoon.

USC plays its first home game in almost a month on Tuesday (May 23) with a 6 p.m. non conference game against Cal State Fullerton. The Trojans then conclude the regular season with a Pac-10 Conference series against Arizona, Friday-Sunday, at Dedeaux Field.
