No. 2 Cal State Fullerton Pulls Out 6-3, 11-Inning Victory Over USC

May 23, 2006

LOS ANGELES - Danny Dorn's game-winning single and David Cooper's two-run single gave the No. 2 Cal State Fullerton Titans a 6-3 win in 11 innings against the host USC Trojans at Dedeaux Field. Titan first baseman Brett Pill finished with a 3-for-6 night while Cooper registered three RBI in the win.

USC (25-30) was officially eliminated from postseason consideration with the loss while Cal State Fullerton improved its record to 40-13.

Ryan Paul (2-1) notched the win with two scoreless innings while Cory Arbiso earned his second save for the Titans with a perfect 11th inning. Trojan starter Shawn Olsen went eight innings, allowing two runs (one earned) on six hits with three walks and four strikeouts.

Senior Darin Vieira singled to right in the second for the Trojans, moving to third when starter Dave Pherrin's pick off attempt went wide of the bag. Vieira attempted to steal home, but Hector Estrella used a suicide squeeze bunt to give the Trojans an early 1-0 lead.

Pill hit an infield single in the third, advanced to second on a walk to Dorn and moved to third on Cooper's fielder's choice. Brandon Tripp then singled home Pill with a base hit up the middle to tie the game.

The Titans took a 2-1 lead in the fifth on Cooper's RBI sacrifice fly to center after Pill led off with a double.

Estrella walked to lead off the bottom of the fifth and scored when Perales ripped a triple to center field. Sophomore Lucas Duda gave the Trojans a 3-2 lead with a pinch-hit RBI single.

Junior All-American Ian Kennedy entered the game in the top of the ninth. Justin Turner used an infield single to reach base and scored the tying run when Pill slammed an RBI triple to center. Dorn was intentionally walked and Kennedy got Cooper to fly out, sending the game to extra innings.

The Trojans put runners at first and second in the 10th inning when Blake Sharpe was intentionally walked. Pinch-hitter Josh Fogel then hit a full-count line drive into left off Paul, but Dorn made a game-saving catch with a sliding grab. The Titans brought home the three runs in the 11th after USC reliever John Dunn (3-2) hit Jared Clark and Blake Davis with pitches before Dorn and Cooper's at-bats.
