Oregon State's Mitch Canham and Dallas Buck Named Pac-10 Baseball Player and Pitcher of the Week

May 23, 2006

WALNUT CREEK, Calif. - OREGON STATE sophomore catcher Mitch Canham and junior right-handed pitcher Dallas Buck have been named the Pacific-10 Conference Baseball Player and Pitcher of the Week, respectively, for May 16 - 22, Commissioner Tom Hansen announced today.

Canham, from Lake Stevens, Wash., batted .538 (7-for-13) with one home run, one double, 10 RBI, four runs scored and was 1-for-1 in stolen base attempts in the Beavers' three-game sweep at Washington State to clinch at least a share of the Conference title. In the series opener, OSU and WSU were tied 1-1 in the top of the fifth inning, when Canham launched a two-run home run to right-centerfield. Canham's homer started a 10-run inning for the Beavers, who went on to outscore Washington State 39-6 in the series. The sophomore also threw out the only Cougar baserunner who attempted to steal during the weekend and played errorless defense. For the week, Canham had an .846 slugging percentage and a .600 on-base average.

Buck, from Newberg, Ore., threw a three-hitter on Friday against a Washington State team that went into the series with a league-leading .323 team batting average. The junior, who earlier in the week was named one of 10 semifinalists for the Roger Clemens Award, walked one and struck out six in pitching his first complete game of the season and the second of his career. Buck needed just 102 pitches and was aided by the Beaver infield turning four double plays behind him. He improved to 10-2 on the season, giving him back-to-back seasons with double-digit wins. Buck's 10 wins tie him for ninth on OSU's all-time list of single-season leaders, and his 25-7 career record ties him for sixth place on OSU's all-time list of career wins leaders.

The Player of the Week honor is the first of Canham's career, while it is the 51st such honor for Oregon State. The Pitcher of the Week honor is the third for Buck, his first this season, and the 58th selection all-time for the Beavers.
