After sweeping through NCAA Regional play and out-scoring opponents by a 23-2 margin, top-seeded UCLA will now play host to South Florida for NCAA Super Regional action this weekend. All games from Los Angeles will be televised live by ESPNU, and Sunday's noon game could be simulcast by ESPN if a third game is not necessary in the Michigan-Tennessee series. Tickets for the Super Regional are as follows: All-Sessions passes are $20 for adults and $15 for students, while single-session tickets are $12 for adults and $8 for students.
Bruins Blast Through NCAA Regional Play
UCLA's offense put together three solid games while the defense was error-free during NCAA Regional play. Friday's 11-2 six-inning win over Missouri State featured a pair of home runs from Jodie Legaspi and a walk-off shot from Krista Colburn. On Saturday against Long Beach State, the Bruins pounded out 10 hits, three of them home runs, en route to a 5-0 win. In Sunday's championship game against San Diego State, the Bruins held a slim 1-0 lead until the top of the sixth inning when UCLA plated six runs, four of them on the first career grand slam by Ashley Herrera on the way to a 7-0 victory.
Five Bruins Earn NFCA All-Pacific Region Honors
Five UCLA softball players have been named to the NFCA All-Pacific Region Team. All five will now be eligible for All-America honors. Named to the Pacific Region first team were Pac-10 Player of the Year Andrea Duran at third base, senior Caitlin Benyi at second base and sophomore pitcher Anjelica Selden. Juniors Jodie Legaspi and Lisa Dodd were named to the All-Pacific Region second team at shortstop and utility, respectively. This is the first career All-Region honor for Duran and Legaspi. Dodd previously earned second-team All-Region honors as a utility player in 2004, her freshman season. Only Benyi and Selden have previously been named NFCA All-Americans. Benyi earned first-team honors as a sophomore in 2004 and second-team honors last year. Selden earned second-team All-America honors as a freshman last season.
UCLA vs. South Florida
South Florida (50-23 At-Large, BIG EAST Conference): UCLA leads the all-time series 7-0. Last Meetings: The Bruins and Bulls played twice in 2001 when South Florida traveled to Easton Stadium for the Easton Classic. UCLA swept the March 3 doubleheader with scores of 10-0 (5 inn) and 5-3. Notable: South Florida was the No. 3 seed at last weekend's Gainesville, Fla., regional. The Bulls won their opening game of the regional by a 2-1 margin over second-seeded North Carolina, then went on to win a pair of games over fourth-seeded Florida Atlantic in order to advance to Super Regionals. Saturday's game was 1-0, while Sunday's score was 7-4. USF hit .250 as a team in Gainesville with just three extra-base hits on the weekend. The Bulls top hitter is Krista Holle, who has a .369 season batting average and went 3-for-6 with three RBI last weekend.
