Washington 14th After Two Rounds at NCAAs
May 24, 2006
Columbus, Ohio - The 23rd-ranked Washington Huskies shot 16-over 304 in the second round at the 2006 NCAA Women's Golf Championship. The UW's two-round total of 33-over 609 places the Huskies 14th. Arizona State shot 6-over 294 in round two and holds the top spot at 10-over 586, three strokes in front of Duke.
'We need to figure out a way to start better,' said Washington head coach Mary Lou Mulflur. 'Both days we've put ourselves in a hole to start the round, so we're having to battle back the whole time. We'll have to figure out something different for tomorrow and see if we can get off to a better start. We seem to be able to finish OK, we just need to start better.'
Washington senior Paige Mackenzie led the Huskies with a 1-over 73 on day two, placing her 22nd at 5-over 149. Pepperdine's Eileen Vargas leads the field by four strokes at 5-under 139.
'Paige is not making as many putts as she usually does,' Mulflur said. 'For whatever reason she's catching a lot of lips and not making the putts. But she's hitting the ball well and her demeanor was good today. I feel like if she made one or two it would open the floodgates and she'd get on a roll.'
UW's Sung Ea Lee shot 3-over 75 for the second straight day, placing the senior 29th at 6-over 150. Moving up to third position for the Huskies was junior Amber Prange, who shot 4-over 76. She is 73rd with a 36-hole total of 10-over 154. Courtney McCracken shot 8-over 80 in round two, positioning her 97th at 14-over 158. Kim Shin's 84 placed her 110th at 16-over 160.
'Sung was even on the back half, and even on that side is really good,' Mulflur said. 'I think that's the tougher side of the course. Amber birdied three of her last six holes to bring her score down. So they battled. It did not look good at the turn and they really turned it on and that saved us from having a really big number today.'
The third round of the NCAA Championship begins at 8:00 a.m. (ET) on Thursday. The Huskies begin teeing off at 9:00.
