Zalameda Advances in Singles and Doubles at NCAAs

May 25, 2006

Stanford, Calif. - UCLA men's tennis player Benjamin Kohlloeffel and women's tennis player Riza Zalameda each won second-round singles matches Thursday at the NCAA Championships hosted by Stanford University.

Kohlloeffel, the tournament's No. 1 seed, battled back from a set down to defeat Colorado's Eric Molnar, 2-6, 6-4, 6-2. He will next face San Diego's Pierrick Ysern in Friday's round of 16. Kohlloeffel will have his work cut out for him, as Ysern, who advanced following a three-set victory over Alabama's Joseph Jung Thursday, was an NCAA singles finalist a year ago.

Zalameda, an NCAA singles semifinalist in 2005, also needed three sets to advance to Friday's round of 16, as she defeated Kentucky's Kim Coventry, 1-6, 6-2, 6-4 in the second round. Next up for Zalameda is a meeting with two-time NCAA Singles Champion Amber Liu of Stanford. Liu, who was upset in the first round a year ago, won this tournament in 2003 and 2004.

UCLA's Laura Gordon and Zalameda opened up the doubles tournament on a good note Thursday, posting a 4-6, 6-3, 6-4 victory over Marshall's Lynzee Kever/Kellie Schmitt. They will face Florida's Whitney Benik/Alexis Gordon in the round of 16. Laura Gordon and Zalameda posted an 8-6 victory over Benik and Alexis Gordon in the team championships last week.
