May 26, 2006
LOS ANGELES - Brad Boyer went 3-for-5 with a home run and three RBI Friday as the Arizona Wildcats defeated the USC Trojans, 10-5, in the first game of the Pac-10 Conference series at Dedeaux Field. Boyer capped a five-run second inning with a two-run shot to right.
Arizona improved to 25-28 overall, 10-12 in Pac-10 play while USC fell to 25-31 overall and 11-11 in conference. Both teams had 12 hits on the evening, but the Trojans stranded 13 runners.
Matt Baugh allowed one unearned run in two innings to get the win for the Wildcats, going to 2-1 on the season. He allowed four hits and struck out one. Daniel Schlereth earned his sixth save with 2 1/3 innings, allowing just one hit.
Junior All-American Ian Kennedy (5-7), pitching in possibly his final game as a Trojan, went 6 1/3 innings and allowed five runs and seven hits. He walked four and struck out eight to finish with 102 strikeouts on the season. Kennedy finishes his career with 380 strikeouts, third all-time at USC behind Rik Currier (449, 1998-2001) and Seth Etherton (420, 1995-98).
Baron Frost's RBI double gave the Trojans a 1-0 lead in the first before the Wildcats' big inning. Jason Donald and Brad Glenn singled before a walk to David Plante loaded the bases with one out. Center fielder T.J. Steele reached on a fielder's choice after Donald was thrown out at the plate by USC third baseman Matt Cusick. Catcher Konrad Schmidt then delivered a three-run double to left as the Wildcats took the lead before Boyer followed up with his second home run on the season for the 5-1 advantage.
Vieira cut the deficit to two with a two-run double in the bottom of the third. Vieira scored another run in the seventh when he singled and moved to third on an error by Steele. Pinch hitter Josh Fogel brought home Vieira with a sacrifice fly to left for a 5-4 Arizona margin.
Steele atoned for his miscue in the eighth with an RBI single. Boyer followed up an RBI single for a 7-4 Wildcats score as Arizona added three more runs in the ninth to complete the scoring.
The series continues with a 1 p.m. start on Saturday (May 27) and Sunday (May 28). Both games will be broadcast live, along with live video and Gametracker stats, on usctrojans.com.
