Durkin and Logar Advance to Singles Quarterfinals; Barnes and Yelsey Move on to Doubles Quarters

May 26, 2006

Stanford, Calif. - Sophomore Celia Durkin and junior Theresa Logar both won in straight-sets today to advance to the quarterfinals of the 2006 NCAA Singles Championship. Alice Barnes and Anne Yelsey fought off a first-set loss for the second-straight day to come back for a third set win. The duo advances to the quarterfinals of the NCAA Doubles Championship.

Durkin won a 6-3, 6-1 match over Zuzana Cerna, a 9-16 seed from Baylor. Durkin trailed early in the match, down 3-1 in the first set, but won 11 of the next 12 games to secure the victory and advance to the final eight. Durkin typically played at the No. 6 position for the Cardinal during the dual season this year, after transferring from Harvard after her freshman campaign. This is Durkin's first appearance in the singles draw, she will face Lindsey Nelson of USC at noon tomorrow. Unseeded Nelson, the 2006 Pac-10 Champion in Ojai, posted a pair of upsets to earn her spot in the quarters - an opening round victory over 9-16 seed Elena Gantcheva of UNLV and a three-set upset of top-seeded Audra Cohen in the Round of 16 this afternoon.

Logar, who was nearly upset yesterday, flew through her round of 16 match today, posting a 6-0, 6-2, victory over sixth-seeded Amanda Fink of USC. Logar, seeded 9-16, is making her first appearance in the quarterfinals after finishing in the round of 32 as a freshman and falling in the round of 16 last year. She will face second-seeded Kristi Miller of Georgia Tech, the only top-seeded player remaining in the women's draw, tomorrow at noon.

Also in singles, both of the Cardinal's seniors took a loss, as Barnes fell 6-3, 6-3 to William & Mary's Megan Moulton-Levy and Amber Liu fell to UCLA's Riza Zalameda, 5-7, 6-2, 7-5.

In doubles, Barnes and Yelsey dropped the first set to TCU's Helena Besovic and Ana Cetnik, the 14th-ranked pair in the nation. The round of 16 match was the second meeting of the two teams in a week, after Stanford knocked off TCU in the round of 16 of the team championship last Thursday. Barnes and Yelsey won the first meeting 8-6, and today, despite an early setback, the top-ranked Cardinal duo finished with strong, taking a 3-6, 6-3, 6-4 victory to earn a spot in the quarters. Barnes and Yelsey will face UCLA's Laura Gordon and Riza Zalameda at 4 p.m. The two squads matched up on April 7, with the Cardinal pair securing a 9-8 win on its home court.

Both Barnes and Yelsey advanced to the finals last season, although on opposite teams - Barnes won the title with graduate Erin Burdette, while Yelsey and Liu finished in second place.
