Kohlloeffel Moves on to Quarterfinals

May 26, 2006

Stanford, Calif. - UCLA women's tennis player Riza Zalameda notched one of the biggest singles victories of her career, while the Bruins' top-seeded men's player Benjamin Kohlloeffel took care of business as usual in Friday's round of 16 at the NCAA Championships hosted by Stanford University.

Zalameda, unseeded in the 64-player singles draw, upset Stanford's eighth-seeded Amber Liu, 5-7, 6-2, 7-5 Friday. Liu is a two-time singles champion at the NCAAs, having captured the title in 2003 and 2004. With the victory, Zalameda advances to face Cal's Suzi Babos on Saturday at Noon. Babos booked a spot in the quarterfinals by upsetting Baylor's fourth-seeded Zuzana Zemenova, 6-3, 6-4. Babos beat Zalameda, 6-2, 6-2 in a dual match this past April. It was the first-ever meeting between the two players.

On the men's side, Kohlloeffel advanced to the quarterfinals with a routine 6-2, 6-1 victory over 2005 NCAA singles finalist Pierrick Ysern of San Diego. Next up for Kohlloeffel will be a quarterfinal meeting with sixth-seeded Conor Niland of Cal on Saturday at 1:00 p.m. Niland is responsible for two of Kohlloeffel's four losses on the season. Kohlloeffel enters the quarterfinal round with a 44-4 overall record.

UCLA still has a women's doubles team alive at the championships, as Laura Gordon and Zalameda moved on to the quarterfinals following a 6-2, 6-4 victory over Florida's Whitney Benik/Alexis Gordon. They will face top-seeded Alice Barnes and Anne Yelsey of Stanford on Saturday at 4:00 p.m.
