May 26, 2006

WEST WINDSOR, N.J. - Washington took full advantage of its second chance to book a date in Saturday's semifinal race.

The Huskies' 11th-ranked varsity eight crew was forced into an early-afternoon repechage race after placing fifth in their morning heat on Mercer Lake at the NCAA Women's Rowing Championships. The top three finishers in each varsity eight heat automatically advanced into the semifinals.

The Huskies broke away from the pack 750 meters into the repechage and won going away to earn one of the three remaining semifinal berths. The Huskies clocked a time of 6-minutes, 23.47-seconds, finishing seven seats ahead of runner-up Notre Dame. Stanford grabbed the final spot into the semifinal races that feature all six Pac-10 crews that competed in the conference championship grand final.

The championships continue Saturday morning with the varsity eight semifinal and repechage races for second eights and fours. Washington's varsity four placed third in its heat and the second varsity eight finished fifth, each of them are slated for repechage races.

The championships conclude Sunday with grand and petite finals in all three events.
