May 27, 2006

TEMPE, Ariz. - Katie Burkhart fanned 10 and allowed only one run on the night with Mindy Cowles hitting her 17th home run of the season and Jessica Mapes going 2-for-3 with two runs scored as the Sun Devil Softball team earned their 12th trip to the Women's College World Series with a 5-1 win over Florida State in Game Two of the Tempe Super Regional Saturday night. The Sun Devils head to Oklahoma City with a 52-13 record while ending FloridaState's season at 44-30.

The game remained deadlocked until the fourth as ASU capitalized on two Seminole errors as Kim Zadrozny gained first after being hit by a pitch followed with a single up the middle from Jessica Mapes and an intentional walk loaded the bases with no outs. With errors from the Seminole shortstop and catcher, Delenah Langley and Jessica Mapes both scored to give ASU a 2-0 lead.

The Devils took advantage of another FSU misstep in the fifth as a lead-off single from Jessica Mapes followed with Kaitlin Cochran gaining first after being hit by a pitch were both plated after a throwing error by the Seminole third baseman pushing ASU up 4-0.

FloridaState was able to add one to the score in the sixth as a lead-off single from Natasha Jacob was brought around on a double down the left field line from Yuruby Alicart. The Sun Devils retaliated in the seventh with a solo shot over center field as Mindy Cowles hit home run #17 on the season, followed with a Burkhart striking out Carey Galuppi and a double play in the bottom of the inning to secure ASU's trip to the 2006 Women's College World Series.

The Sun Devils will take on the Texas Longhorns first at the College World Series, with play beginning this Thursday at Hall of Fame Stadium in Oklahoma City, OK.
