Lindsey Nelson Finishes Second In NCAA Singles Championships

May 29, 2006

PALO ALTO, CALIF. -- After an outstanding run through the NCAA Women's Singles Championships, USC sophomore Lindsey Nelson fell in the title match to California's Suzi Babos on Monday at Stanford's Taube Tennis Center. Nelson had posted several hard-fought wins to reach Monday's championship match, but Babos proved stronger in the final with a 6-4, 6-1 victory to claim the singles title.

Nelson entered the tournament ranked #18 in the nation, and Babos had a #27 ranking. Both toppled highly ranked seeded opponents to work their ways into the championship match, where Babos held on for the early first-set lead and then warded off Nelson's attempts at a comeback. Nelson finishes her sophomore season at USC with a 25-9 overall singles record. After topping top-seeded Audra Cohen of Miami in a three-set battle in the Round of 16 to secure her first trip to the NCAA quarterfinals, Nelson gutted out another three-set comeback against Stanford's Celia Durkin. Nelson's semifinal match was a shorter decicion, as she won two quick sets against William and Mary's Megan Moulton-Levy for a shot at the 2006 NCAA Singles Championship.

Nelson played the No. 1 singles position for the Women of Troy in dual match competition, where USC went 21-4 and reached the NCAA Semifinals for the first time since 1988. Nelson also competed in the NCAA Doubles Championships, reaching the Round of 16 with teammate Luana Magnani.
