Richardson, Lombardo Earn Academic All-America Honors

June 16, 2006

UCLA senior gymnast Kate Richardson (Coquitlam, BC) and senior rower Sarah Lombardo (Long Beach, CA) have been named to the 2005-06 CoSIDA/ESPN the Magazine Academic All-America Women's At-Large Team. Richardson was selected to the first team, making her the eighth UCLA student-athlete to earn three career Academic All-America honors. Lombardo became the first Bruin ever to be named an Academic All-American in two sports, earning third-team honors in rowing this season and first-team honors in soccer in 2003.

Richardson adds yet another honor to her illustrious career. This year alone, she has been awarded a NCAA postgraduate scholarship, a Pac-10 Conference Medal and a third Pac-10 All-Academic honor. She also won the NCAA floor exercise title (her third individual NCAA title of her career); three All-America honors to bring her career total to 13; the NCAA Regional all-around, bars, beam and floor titles; and the Pac-10 Gymnast of the Year award. Richardson, who holds a 3.67 grade point average in Psychobiology, made history in 2004 by becoming only the second female collegiate gymnast ever to compete at the Olympic Games.

Lombardo, a 3.95 student in Molecular, Cellular and Developmental Biology, rowed on the second varsity in 2005-06. She earned first-team Pac-10 All-Academic honors (she was also a Pac-10 All-Academic honoree in soccer in 2002 and 2003) and helped the second varsity record eight victories in 12 races this season. She joined the rowing team in 2004-05 after sitting out her senior season with soccer due to injury.
