Stanford Wrestling Names Ray Blake Assistant Coach

July 20, 2006

Stanford, Calif. - Former Cardinal wrestler Ray Blake has been named an assistant coach for the Stanford wrestling program for the 2006-07 season. Blake will replace John Clark as the second assistant, joining head coach Kerry McCoy, assistant coach Kevin Klemm and volunteer assistant Matt Gentry on the Stanford staff.

Blake captained the Cardinal squad in 2005-06 and led the team to its second winning season in three years with an 8-7 record. He capped off his senior campaign with his first NCAA Championship appearance and tied a Stanford record during his senior season with 41 wins. Blake was also the 2006 Jake Gimbel Award Winner, which is presented to the male senior for Excellence of Attitude in Athletic Endeavor.

'I'm very excited to have Ray staying in the area and joining our staff,' said McCoy. 'The fact that he was a Stanford wrestler will aid him in a lot of ways. His experience in recruiting, fundraising and day-to-day operations will be extremely helpful.'

Blake will assume his position in September.
