July 21, 2006
Sophomore to be Rhonda Watkins won both the high and long jump competitions at the 2006 Central American/Caribbean Junior Championships July 14-16. The standout jumper set a new Trinidadian Junior high jump record, and equaled her junior long jump record at the meet.
Watkins won the high jump with a lifetime-best mark of 6-0 (1.83m), breaking her own previous record of 5-11.50 set in 2005. In the long jump, she equaled her lifetime-best of 21-6.25, set during the prelims of the 2006 NCAA Championships, to tie her record and win that event.
In just her first season at UCLA, Watkins won both the long and high jump titles at the West Region Championships, automatically qualifying her for the NCAA meet. At the Pac-10 Championships, Watkins won the high jump and was third in the long.
At the NCAA Outdoor meet, Watkins posted the longest qualifying mark in the preliminary rounds, 21-6.25, and eventually finished 12th overall in the final.
