Chappell and Kang Are Eliminated in Match Play at U.S. Amateur

Aug. 23, 2006

UCLA's Kevin Chappell and incoming freshman Jason Kang were each eliminated in the first round of match play at the 106th U.S. Amateur at Hazeltine GC in Chaska, MN.

Kang fell 2 and 1 to Canada's Ryan Yip in a morning match. Kang held a brief 1-up lead after posting a birdie at the par-4 fifth, but Yip birdied the sixth to square the match. At the ninth, Yip posted another birdie and held a 1-up lead until he birdied the 11th to move ahead 2-up. Kang cut the lead to one on the next hole, but Yip's birdie at the 14th gave him another 2-up lead. The next three holes were halved and Yip won without playing the 18th. On the day, with the usual match play concessions Kang was even par.

Chappell built a 3-up lead against Greg Carlin after a birdie at the par 3 eighth. Chappell's untimely bogeys at the ninth and 12th holes, and clutch birdies by Carlin at the 11th, 14th and 15th holes propelled Carlin to victory. Chappell was two-under par on the day with the usual match play concessions.
