California's Anna Key Named 2006 NCAA Division I Sportsmanship Award Winner

WALNUT CREEK, Calif.-- Anna Key, senior goalkeeper for the CALIFORNIA women's soccer team was named the recipient of the 2006 NCAA Division I Sportsmanship Award, NCAA Vice President for Education Ronald Stratten announced.
Each of the nominees exemplified the good sportsmanship that characterizes the highest level of respect, caring, fairness, civility, honesty, integrity and responsibility during competition. In recognition of their outstanding efforts, the Committee on Sportsmanship and Ethical Conduct (CESC) and the NCAA will award the winners with a certificate, along with plaques to the divisional and national winners.
Key, a native of Oakland, Calif., played in five games last season, helping Cal to a 16-4-2 overall record and the program's first Sweet 16 appearance since 1988. Key logged over 175 minutes in goal, picking up six saves, while giving up just one goal for a 0.51 goals against average.
Earlier this year, Key garnered the 2006 Pac-10 Sportsmanship Award, which she shared with WASHINGTON STATE hurdler, Eric Nygard. The award, selected by members of the Pac-10 Student-Athlete Advisory Council (SAAC), is based on good sportsmanship and ethical behavior in participation of intercollegiate athletics, as well as a demonstration of good citizenship outside of the sports-competition setting.
