No. 17 Cal Volleyball Defeats Montana, 3-0

BERKELEY, CALIF. - Paced by the strong hitting of freshman Hana Cutura, the No. 17-ranked Cal women's volleyball team (1-0) started off the 2006 season with a 3-0 (30-27, 30-22, 30-25) victory over Montana (0-1) Friday night in the season-opener and first day of the Cal Molten Classic at Haas Pavilion. Cutura, a true freshman from Zagreb, Croatia, was impressive, notching a team-high 16 kills with only four errors in 25 attempts for a .480 hitting percentage. She also recorded three service aces.
In the 4:30 match, Baylor topped UC Davis, 3-1 (30-18, 30-20, 30-32, 30-16), led by senior Nicole LeBlanc's 21 kills.
In addition to Cutura's efforts, junior standout Angie Pressey finished with 13 kills (13k, 3e, 25att, .400 hitting percentage), junior Ellen Orchard had seven kills with only one error in 10 attempts (.600), and senior setter and team captain Samantha Carter added 38 assists with a team-high four service aces and 13 digs.
On her 21st birthday, fellow Bear team captain Jillian Davis recorded six digs and now has 1,268 career digs, third on the Cal all-time list.
The Bears out-hit the Grizziles, .284 to .049, and controlled the match despite 20 service errors. Cal did, however, record 10 service aces - four by Carter, three by Cutura, two by Orchard and one by sophomore Morgan Beck. Carter now has 93 career service aces, only three away from joining the Bears all-time Top 10 list.
Cal will next host UC Davis at noon on Saturday, Aug. 26, while Montana and Baylor battle in the other noon match at Haas Pavilion. Montana and UC Davis will then face each other at 4:30 p.m. before Baylor and Cal conclude the tournament at 7 p.m. Saturday.
