Swimming Welcomes 16 Newcomers For 2006-07 Season

Aug. 31, 2006

SEATTLE-- The University of Washington men's and women's swimming teams welcome 16 newcomers for the 2006-07 season. The Huskies add nine men to their roster and seven women.

The incoming class is one of the best to commit to the University of Washington in recent years with student-athletes from across the United State and Europe. With the talents of the newcomers, combined with the talents of Washington's veterans, the Husky swim team is poised to be a strong force in the Pac-10 this season.

Headlining the men's freshman class is butterfly and individual medley specialist Erez Fern (Herzelia, Israel/ Hof Hasharon). A world championships qualifier, Fern will make an immediate impact in the 100 and 200 fly events. Fern will also team with established Huskies Bret Lundgaard, Mason Amick and Jared Osborne to make the fly one of Washington's strongest events this season.

Yonatan Cohen (Neve-Monoson-Yahud, Israel/Hof Hasharon) joins UW after one season at Georgia Tech. Cohen specializes in the breaststroke and IM events and his best times would already rank among Washington's top-10 in four events.

Washington also welcomes local swimmers David Bai (Des Moines, Wash.), Hunter Barrett (Bellevue, Wash.) and James Schuyleman (Issaquah, Wash.), and California natives Jonny Muir (Santa Clara), Jereme Barnett-Woods (Irvine, Calif.) and Andrew Nguyen (La Canada, Calif.).

Barrett, Barnett-Woods and Nguyen will be asked to lead the distance team this year with the departure of Hunter McCallister and Scott Spansail. Barrett and Barnett-Woods are both Senior National qualifiers in the freestyle events. Schuyleman, also a senior national qualifier, will contribute in multiple events and serve to help the team in the IM, backstroke and butterfly events. Bai and Jonny are expected to contribute in the freestyle events.

Erin Campbell (Chandler, Ariz.), Jessica Gaines (Davis, Calif.) and Petra Radovic (Zagreb, Croatia) lead a very talented group of incoming women who are poised to make immediate impacts. Campbell is a multiple stroke talent, and her versatility will contribute to the Huskies in the butterfly, backstroke and IM events. Gaines is a standout backstroke talent and will compete for the top spot in the backstroke events. Radovic is also a multi-talented stroke swimmer, but will specialize in the sprint freestyle events and join an already established sprint group.

Also joining the women's team are Jennifer Gong (Campbell, Calif.) and Dominique Lazarovici (Cupertino, Calif.) and both will provide immediate help in the middle distance freestyle and backstroke events. They will be looked upon to be major contributors this year and push the upperclassmen in those events. Rian Buckley (Olympia, Wash.) and Bethany Coleman (Marysville, Calif.) round out the class, bringing raw talent that should develop during their careers.

The annual Oktoberfest kicks off the Huskies' season on September 30. The intrasquad meet will begin at 10 a.m. at Husky Pool.
