Final Stats

BERKELEY, Calif. - No. 10 California scored an early goal to defeat Kansas, 1-0, Friday afternoon on the first day of the 12th-annual Cal Invitational at Edwards Stadium. The Golden Bears improved to 3-0 with their third consecutive 1-0 decision of 2006, while the Jayhawks fell to 1-1.

'I thought we did a really good job in the first half of knocking the ball around and getting our rhythm and playing the way we want to play,' said Cal head coach Kevin Boyd. 'We didn't do that in the second half. I don't know why. Third game in, we got one (good) half. It was better than any of the halves we had last week, and Sunday we're going to try to put two halves together.'

Senior midfielder Nadia Al-Lami put Cal ahead for good in the fifth minute when she scored on a header from a corner kick delivered by senior forward Katie Ratican. The corner kick was driven to the far post, and the 5-8 Al-Lami rose above the defense to score her sixth goal of her career and first of the season. Cal had three corner kicks today after earning none in their first two contests this year.

'I think we're dangerous on corners, so I was waiting for us to get a chance at it,' said Boyd. 'The first one went near post. The second one went far post, and we stuck it away. It was a great goal.'

Kansas held a 6-5 shot advantage in the teams' first-ever meeting after the Bears entered the half with a 4-1 edge. However, all five of Cal's chances were on goal compared to two by the Jayhawks. Cal senior goalkeeper Anna Key secured the two saves in the second half to earn her third shutout this season.

In the last two seasons, the Bears have posted 17 shutouts in 25 games.

In the earlier game today, No. 15 Cal State Fullerton recorded a 2-1 decision over Saint Mary's. The Titans jumped out to a 1-0 lead at the 5:34 mark on a goal from Candice Byler off a cross from Erica Janke. Shortly after the kickoff, the Gaels answered with a quick strike from Nikki Schrey off a pass from McKenna Belzer. Desiree Flint notched the game-winning goal in the 75th minute from 20 yards.

Cal faces Cal State Fullerton in the title game of the Cal Invitational Sunday at 1 p.m. Prior to that contest, Kansas battles Saint Mary's at 10 a.m.
