No. 17 Cal Volleyball Tops Xavier, 3-0

MIAMI, FLA. - Again led by the powerful hitting of freshman Hana Cutura, the No. 17-ranked Cal women's volleyball team defeated Xavier, 3-0 (30-19, 30-25, 30-16), Friday in the opening match of the 2006 Florida International Tournament in Miami, Fla. Cutura, a true freshman from Zagreb, Croatia, had a team-high 15 kills with no errors in 26 attempts for a .577 hitting percentage. Sophomore Morgan Beck added 12 kills and junior Angie Pressey notched 10 kills to help the Golden Bears improve their record to 4-0. Xavier fell to 3-2.
Cutura now has a team-high 60 kills in four matches this season. She is also hitting a team-best .446, tallying 60 kills with only 10 errors in 112 attempts.
Cal out-hit the Musketeers, .423 to .143, including game three when the Bears recorded 18 kills with only two errors in 29 attempts. Cal has now won 12 straight games in its four match wins. Other top performances for the Bears against Xavier were senior captain Samantha Carter's season-high 41 assists, Beck's career-high seven block assists and six total blocks by junior Ellen Orchard.
Carter, Beck and freshman Kristen Kathan also added two service aces apiece, and senior libero Jillian Davis had a team-high 12 digs. Carter now has 95 career service aces, only one away from joining the Bears' all-time Top 10 list.
Cal will next play Oral Roberts at 10 a.m. and host Florida International at 7 p.m., Saturday, Sept. 2 in the conclusion of the Florida International Tournament.
