Rethmeier Runs to First Collegiate Cross Country Victory at Riverside
Sept. 1, 2006
Junior Claire Rethmeier raced to her first collegiate cross country victory on Friday morning to lead the Bruin women to victory in a dual meet between UCLA and UC Riverside. The Bruins defeated the highlanders 23-35 in an early morning race.
Two UC Riverside women tried to keep the lead, but at the 5:20 mile mark, Rethmeier (13:52) made her final move, running away from UCR's top runner to win by 10 seconds.
'Claire has worked very hard over the summer and has come out ready to really attack the races we have on our schedule,' said Cross Country Coach Eric Peterson. 'It's great to see her finally get a win under her belt.'
The meet saw the return of three important runners to the cross country team after redshirting last season - seniors Allison Hall and Jenna Timinsky and sophomore Olga Aulet-Leon. Timinsky finished fourth (14:15), Aulet-Leon was 8th (14:28) and Hall was 10th (14:33).
'It is so great to have these three women back,' added Peterson. 'The strength of our team is in that middle pack and having them back and finishing so well today shows how important they are to this squad. They gave a real boost to the effort of this team.'
The Bruins will now head to Mammoth Lakes, CA for an 18-day training camp before heading to St. Paul, MN for the Roy Griak Invitational on September 23.
