Volleyball Moves to 4-0 With Win Over Auburn

Sept. 1, 2006

AUBURN, Ala. - The Arizona State Sun Devils volleyball team saw their consecutive winning games streak snapped at 11, but they continued their hot start to the 2006 season by defeating host Auburn 3-1 at the Auburn/Mizuno Challenge to move to 4-0 on the year.

The Devils and Tigers were back and forth for much of the first game, until a five point Sun Devil run put the Tigers away, as ASU took the first game 30-27. Game two was more of the same, and it was once again a five point run that gave ASU game two 30-25.

Arizona State saw their 11 game win streak snapped 31-29 in the third game, as Auburn made it two games to one. It looked as if the Tigers would even things up in the fourth game until ASU went on a 20-5 run to close out Auburn 30-16.

Margie Giordano led the Devils, registering a double-double thanks to her 18 kills and 15 digs. She also added three service aces. Nicole Morton (14) and Nina Reeves (11) also turned in double-digit kill efforts in the ASU victory. The setting duo of Rachel Mittelstaedt and Marina Mercer continued to impress, as Mercer led the team with 24 assists while Mittelstaedt had 22. Sydney Donahue once again led ASU in digs, recording 26.

Arizona State will take on nationally ranked Purdue and Virginia Tech tomorrow at the final day of the Auburn/Mizuno Challenge.
