Cal Women Win San Francisco Invitational, Men Take Third

SAN FRANCISCO - Behind four top 10 showings, the California women's cross country team opened the 2006 season by capturing the San Francisco Invitational with 34 points Saturday morning at Golden Gate Park. The Cal men, which held out many of their top runners, finished third with 64 points.

In the women's competition, Cal held off host San Francisco which posted 53 points, while San Jose State took third with 57 points. San Franciso won the men's event with 25 points, and Santa Clara was second with 53.

Cal senior Bridget Duffy placed second on the 5K course in a time of 17:43.00, while junior Rebecca Yau took third in 17:51.00. Duffy and Yau were Cal's top two performers in 2005. Bears senior Elizabeth Mayeda finished eighth, clocking in at 18:35.30, and freshman Alisson Greggor grabbed 10th (18:41.10). Freshman Rebecca Palm posted the Bears' final counting score by placing 11th (18:44.40).

Cal junior Pippa Macdonald also recorded a top-20 spot, placing 18th in 18:57.40. Other results for the Bears included sophomore Mackenzie Pierce placing 34th (19:32.50), and senior Lisa Sandoval finishing 44th (20:10.50).

San Jose State's Tiffany Hall won the race in 17:37.90.

Sophomore Eric Lee paced the Cal men by placing fifth on the 8K course in 26:33.60. Sophomore Matt Miller was the next fastest runner for the Bears in 26:48.50 (eighth). Rounding out Cal's results were sophomore Sean Carey in 14th (27:19.80), junior Andrew Perezchica in 22nd (27:42.60), Peter Deptula in 24th (27:56.20) and junior Francis Gadayan in 31st (28:25.30).

Ronald Tibaduiza, an unattached athlete, claimed the men's individual crown in 25:57.30.

Cal returns to action at the Aggie Invitational in Davis Sept. 9.
