No. 11 Cal Falls to No. 2 SMU, 1-0, in SMU Tourney

Sept. 2, 2006

RICHARDSON, Texas - The 11th-ranked California men's soccer team lost to second-ranked Southern Methodist University, 1-0, in a non-conference match on Saturday evening at the SMU Radisson Invitational at the UT-Dallas Stadium Field. The Golden Bears' record falls to 1-2-1, while Mustangs improve to 4-0-0.

'It was a hard-fought match by both teams,' said Cal head coach Kevin Grimes, who graduated from SMU in 1990. 'We created a number of chances to not only tie but to win the match. Their goalkeeper came up with some outstanding saves, and we had a couple of opportunities that were sure finishes that didn't end up bouncing our way. In the end it was a one-goal game, they got the goal, and the victory was theirs.'

Cal senior defender Steve Purdy, sophomore forward Jacob Wilson and senior midfielder Eric Ebert earned spots on the all-tournament team.

The box score will follow.

Cal will next play Cal State Fullerton and San Jose State next Friday and Sunday, respectively, as part of the Stanford Nike Invitational. The Bears play the Titans at 5 p.m. on Sept. 8 at the Cardinal's Maloney Field and then play the Spartans at 7 p.m. on Sept. 10 at Spartan Stadium.
