Sept. 2, 2006

The USC women's cross country team ran in its first meet of the season today (Sept. 2) and placed fifth at the Cal State Fullerton Jammin Invitational held in Fullerton, Calif., despite the team's expected top two runners, seniors Ashley Jensen and Kristen Berglas, not competing.

The Trojans were led by freshman Bridget Helgerson (Portland, Ore.) who placed 21st with a time of 19:25.30. Sophomore transfer Christine Greer (Warrington, Pa.) ran unattached today and finished with a time of 19:31.40, second among Trojan runners, but her time did not count in the team scoring.

USC's top six official finishers were freshman with Kelsey Connor (Oak Park, Calif.) placing 27th with a time of 19:37.40, Daniela Gergley (San Ramon, Calif.) 28th with a time of 19:37.40, Chanel Fischetti (Laguna Niguel, Calif.) 42nd with a time of 20:02.30, Katherine Ellis (Vancouver, Wash.) 63rd with a time of 20:44.70 and Natalie Jarvey (Auburn, Wash.) 68th with a time of 20:51.10.

'I was really impressed how Bridget Helgerson stepped up in her first race as a Trojan,' said USC cross country coach Tom Walsh. 'I was also very pleased that our first seven finishers were first-year people or freshmen.'

Senior Christina Eads (Fallbrook, Calif.) finished 86th with a time of 21:13.00 as the Trojans' official seventh-place finisher. Also competing today for USC were freshman Jennifer Wells (Fountain Valley, Calif.) who ran the course in 21:17.50, sophomore Allison Spies (San Diego, Calif.) who had a time of 21:27.40 and junior Sara Fusco (Margate, N.J.) who had a time of 22:32.80.

The Trojans scored 181 points to finish fifth among 19 teams in the college competition. Concordia College won the meet (74 points), followed by Loyola Marymount (97 points), Cal State Fullerton (128 points), San Diego State (169 points) and USC. There were a total of 225 female runners competing at the Cal State Fullerton Jammin Invitational.

The Women of Troy will be in action next at the Aztec Invitational in San Diego, Calif. on Sept. 16.
