Sept. 5, 2006
WALNUT CREEK, Calif. - STANFORD senior midfielder Shari Summers has been named the Pac-10 Women's Soccer Player of the Week for Aug. 29- Sept. 4, Commissioner Tom Hansen announced today.
Summers, a native of Canyon Country, Calif., was instrumental in leading the Cardinal to their first two wins of the season in as many matches on the home pitch. Coming off an injury the previous week, Summers made an immediate impact in Friday's match against San Francisco, as she gave the Cardinal a 1-0 lead with a header in the 32nd minute. Stanford would go on to score a 3-0 win.
On Sunday, Summers again recorded the game-winning goal, striking on a penalty kick in the 17th minute of Stanford's 2-0 win over Cal Poly. Summers led the Cardinal with 12 shots over the weekend matches. Her two goals already equals her career-high for a season. The senior now has seven career goals along with two assists.
The Stanford women (2-2-0) set off for the East Coast this weekend for matches against Rutgers and Long Island.
This is Summers' first Pac-10 Player of the Week honor and Stanford's 16th weekly honor all-time.
