Shari Summers Named Pac-10 Player of the Week
Sept. 6, 2006
Walnut Creek, Calif. - Cardinal midfielder Shari Summers has been named the Pacific-10 Player of the Week, as announced by Pac-10 Commissioner Tom Hansen yesterday. The honor is the first of Summers' career, the 16th for a Stanford player all-time and the first for a Cardinal player this season. Last season, Rachel Buehler was the only Cardinal recognized, as the defender received her first Player of the Week honor on October 4.
This weekend, Summers returned from injury and led the Cardinal to a pair of wins over San Francisco and Cal Poly. The senior scored both game-winners, and notched a team-high 12 shots for the weekend. Against the Dons, Summers scored on a header in the 32nd minute to give the Cardinal a 1-0 lead. In the match with the Mustangs, she drove home a penalty kick in the 17th minute to give Stanford an early advantage.
Summers now has seven career goals and two career assists. Her two goals this weekend matched her highest career total for any single-season.
Summers and the Cardinal continue play against Rutgers and Long Island this weekend on the East Coast.
