Felibert, USC Win Titles In Season's First Tournament
Sept. 7, 2006
Senior Veronica Felibert fired a 2-under 70 to win her second career title, helping the No. 8 USC women's golf team win its 2006-2007 opening event at the Topy Cup at the Tanagura C.C. in Fukushima-ken, Japan, on Thursday (Sept. 7).
Felibert, claiming her first individual crown since her freshman season, finished with a three-day 217 (+1), two shots ahead of Stanford's Jennifer Tangtiphaiboontan and Satoko Kawahara of Japan's Kyushu.
USC also won by two strokes with an 892, coming back from three strokes back to beat knock off Stanford (894). USC's final round of 291 was low of the day. Tohoku Fukushi and Chukyo Gakuin tied for third (910) and Nagoya Commerce was fifth (921).
Felibert followed her second-round 72 with a third-round 70, her lowest since the third round of the 2005 Pac-10 Championships. After a par on the front nine, she birdied three times and bogeyed once on the back nine. Felibert actually trailed Kawahara by four strokes at the start of the back nine, but was able to reel her in.
The Women of Troy are picking up where they left off last season when the squad won four team titles and a combined five individual titles. Graduated senior Irene Cho won four of them and Schreefel won the fifth (at the NCAA Championships).
