No. 17 USC Gets A Jump On North Texas In 2-0 Win
Sept. 10, 2006
LINCOLN, NEB. -- The No. 17-ranked USC women's soccer team will return home with a three-game winning streak after posting a 2-0 victory over North Texas on Sunday to wrap up the Nebraska adidas Invitational with a 4-1-1 record. Sophomore forward Nini Loucks punched in her third goal of the season just 1 minute and 37 seconds into the game, clinching her second game-winning goal of the year.
The North Texas match marked the return of USC sophomore forward Amy Rodriguez, who had been in Russia with the U.S. Under-20 Women's National Team. Rodriguez wasted little time making an impact on the field for the Women of Troy. She got deep in North Texas territory early on and sent in a low cross from the left side of the field. The ball got through to Loucks, who slipped in a left-footed score off the right post to give the Trojans an early 1-0 lead. USC's offensive pressure didn't stop after that. Sixteen minutes later, Rodriguez broke loose down the middle, beating her defender and taking the North Texas goalie one-on-one. Her first shot attempt was saved, but Rodriguez gathered up the rebound, made one quick move and promptly deposited the ball in the back of the net to make it 2-0 USC at the 18-minute mark.
The Trojans dominated the rest of the half, but was unable to finish off their shot opportunities. USC's clean and organized first half of play gave way to a rougher second half, but the Trojans still utilized a staunch defensive effort to neutralize the North Texas front line.
In the second half, another Rodriguez cross was met by freshman forward Jamie Petrossi, but Petrossi's one-time shot sailed high with 35:30 on the clock. North Texas managed three corner kicks and got off five shots in the second half, but the Trojan defense took care of the threats. Redshirt freshman Brittany Massro made her first appearance in goal for USC, coming in in the 16th minute of action and notching a save during her stand in goal.
USC continues nonconference action next week with a home stand the puts the Trojans up against Eastern Washington at 3 p.m. on Friday (Sept. 15) and then UNLV at 1 p.m. on Sunday (Sept. 17) at McAlister Field.
