Sept. 12, 2006
WALNUT CREEK, Calif.-- UCLA sophomore forward Maxwell Griffin has been named the Pac-10 Men's Soccer Player of the Week for Sept. 5-11, Commissioner Tom Hansen announced today.
Griffin, from Palmdale, Calif., helped UCLA win the Crescent Financial Solutions Invitational at New Mexico after posting a 2-0 record with wins over the host Lobos (2-0) and Oakland (4-1).
In Friday's match, Griffin came off the bench to score both goals against 15th-ranked New Mexico. He broke a scoreless tie with a goal in the 57th minute and then scored another a minute and a half later to record his first career multiple-goal game. The win was UCLA's first of the season and came against a team that made the finals of the NCAA Tournament a year ago.
In addition to his performance against New Mexico, Griffin started for UCLA against Oakland and helped the Bruins earn a 4-1 victory.
Leading the team with three goals and six points, Griffin is also tied for third in the Conference with a 1.20 points per game average.
Soccer Times' latest poll has UCLA ranked 19th in its Top-25 rankings, with two big matches this week against sixth-ranked Santa Clara on Fri., Sept. 15 and No. 10 San Francisco on Sun., Sept. 17.
This is Griffin's first weekly honor and the 26th all-time award for the Bruins.
