No. 4 Huskies Blank NIU 5-0 In Husky Classic Opener

Sept. 15, 2006

SEATTLE - Junior forwards Kevin Forrest and Ely Allen each scored a pair of goals, while senior defender Matt Fischer added a fifth to lead the fourth-ranked Washington men's soccer team to a 5-0 victory over Northern Illinois in the first round of the Husky Fever Classic at Husky Soccer Field, Friday evening.

The victory preserved the Huskies' undefeated record thus far as UW improved to 6-0-0, while NIU fell to 4-3-0. It was the third shutout of the season for Washington, which has outscored its opponents 19-3 through six games. Redshirt freshman goalkeeper Rylan Hawkins was credited with the shutout. Sophomore midfielder Jo Jo Katz recorded assists on three of the five goals, while sophomore midfielder Raphael Cox was credited a pair of assists.

The match remained scoreless through nearly the entire first half, until Forrest and Fischer tallied goals in the 41st and 45th minutes, respectively, to give the Huskies a 2-0 cushion at the intermission. Washington then scored three goals in a nine-minute span during the second half to put the game away. Forrest netted his second goal of the match and eighth of the season in the 57th minute, while Allen tallied back-to-back scores in the 65th and 66th minutes.

The match was just the second home contest of the season for the Huskies, who had returned home after a four-game road swing. In their home opener, UW blew past UC Davis 5-0 as well.

'I thought the key goals were the late goals in the first half,' UW head coach Dean Wurzberger said. 'If we defend well and get our forwards the ball in good positions, they're going to do well. It's a great effort by our team. Last year the team wasn't happy with our home record, so we're off to a booming start, two real quality showings. I'm delighted for the guys.'

Forrest's first goal came on the end of some nifty passing, as Allen began the play by serving a cross to the right side that was one-touched by Katz and headed by Forrest to the far post. Fischer's goal also came on a header, off a corner kick from Cox at the 44:02 mark in the first half.

The nine-minute scoring barrage in the second half began at 56:45 when Forrest received a through ball from Katz and nailed a 22-yard shot to the far post past NIU keeper Matt Corcoran. Allen sealed the win with back-to-back goals just eight minutes later, first flicking a shot over the goalkeeper after receiving a long lob pass from Katz and then knocking in a cross from Cox.

In the other Husky Fever Classic first round match-up, Portland blanked Marshall 6-0. The tournament wraps up Sunday, Sept. 17, with Portland facing Northern Illinois at 11 a.m., followed by the Huskies' match with Marshall at 1:30 p.m.
