Volleyball Knocks Off Butler 3-1

Sept. 16, 2006

TEMPE, Ariz. - After dropping the first game to Butler 30-28 on Saturday night at the Tempe Courtyard by Marriott Classic, the Sun Devils came storming back to win the next three games and claim the match, improving their record to 7-3 on the year.

The first game was a see-saw battle, as the two teams fought through 15 ties and eight lead changes before the Bulldogs were able to eke out the 30-28 win. But Arizona State came out with a vengeance in game two, dominating for a 30-15 win. The Devils did not trail the entire game on their way to evening the match. Game three was more of the same, as once again ASU raced out to an early lead and never looked back, winning 30-19. Game four was a more tightly contested duel, as the two squads tied six times. Arizona State managed to hold a lead for the majority of the game, eventually outlasting the Bulldogs for a 30-20 win and the match.

Nina Reeves and Nicole Morton each led the Devils with 16 kills. Reeves added 13 digs for the double-double. Sydney Donahue again led ASU with 26 digs, with Margie Giordano right behind her with 23. ASU held Butler to a .094 hitting percentage while hitting at a .220 clip themselves. Marina Mercer led the Devils with 32 assists.

The Tempe Courtyard by Marriott Classic wraps up tomorrow afternoon when ASU takes on Notre Dame at 1 PM in the final match of the tournament. With the win over Butler, ASU evens their record at 1-1 in the Tempe Courtyard by Marriott Classic while Butler finishes the tournament at 0-3. Earlier in the evening, Notre Dame took out Duke 3-1. The Blue Devils finished the weekend at 2-1. Notre Dame can win the tournament with a victory over the Sun Devils tomorrow. However, if ASU sweeps the Irish, then the Sun Devils will take home the tournament title.
