Sept. 19, 2006
WALNUT CREEK, Calif.-- UCLA sophomore forward Maxwell Griffin has been named the Pac-10 Men's Soccer Player of the Week for Sept. 12-18, Commissioner Tom Hansen announced today.
Griffin, from Palmdale, Calif., helped UCLA win a pair of games against Top-10 opponents over the weekend, defeating No. 7 Santa Clara, 2-1, and No. 8 San Francisco, 2-0.
In Friday's match, Griffin broke a scoreless tie with a goal at 66:36, and just 19 seconds later, assisted on teammate Jason Leopoldo's goal that put the Bruins up 2-0 against Santa Clara.
Griffin, who celebrated his 19th birthday on Sunday, also scored first for UCLA against San Francisco, striking at 16:19 after receiving a pass from Chance Myers and dribbling between two defenders to take the shot.
In addition to receiving Conference honors, Griffin was named to this week's Top Drawer Soccer Team of the Week and was named the College Soccer News National Player of the Week.
Leading the Bruins in scoring, Griffin has tallied five goals and 11 points in just seven games, already surpassing his total from last season.
UCLA's big wins against ranked opponents pushed the Bruins up 10 spots in the Soccer Times' latest poll moving them from 19th to ninth in its Top-25 rankings.
This is Griffin's second consecutive weekly honor and the 27th all-time award for the Bruins.
