SEATTLE -The WashingtonState women's soccer team fell to New Mexico 1-0 Thursday in the first match of the Pac-10/Mountain West Challenge Tournament hosted by Washington at Husky Soccer Field.

New Mexico controlled much of the first half action, out shooting the Cougars 7-0 in the first 20 minutes of play.  WashingtonState came to life with in later part of the half creating its best chances at the 23:36 mark when a Carly Dobratz shot deflected off the crossbar and at the 40:55 mark on a Brooke Bemis header shot off a free kick.

The two teams continued to battle late into the second half before the Lobos pulled ahead 1-0 at the 75:45 mark as the match restarted after an injury timeout that last more than 10 minutes.  Asha Richardson fired a shot from 17 yards out on the right side beating Cougar keeper Amber Wittmers near post.

WashingtonState put on the pressure in the time remaining nearly tying the match in the 84th minute when a deflected shot by Elysse Van Leer was saved off the goal line by Lobos keeper Shannon Adragna.

'The first half of play was really very slow,' said head coach Matt Potter.  'In the second half, I was pleased with the way we tried to change the tempo of the game.  We created some good chances but just couldn't put them away.  Obviously, the long injury timeout coming 15 minutes before time made it a new game and credit to New Mexico for being the better team in those remaining minutes.'

The two squads each recorded 13 shots in the contest with Dobratz pacing the Cougar offense with five.  Wittmers made four stops in the match while Adragna recorded three.
