Sept. 26, 2006
Walnut Creek, Calif. - Shari Summers Earns Second Pac-10 Player of the Week HonorSenior becomes the first Cardinal player to be honored twice in one season.
Stanford midfielder Shari Summers has been named the Pac-10 Women's Soccer Player of the Week for Sept. 19-25, Commissioner Tom Hansen announced today. Summers scored three goals for the Cardinal this weekend, leading the team to a pair of key wins.
In Friday night's match against UC Irvine, Summers cracked a shot off the right post and into the goal in the 55th minute to extend the Cardinal's lead to 2-0. Two days later, Summers spurred the Cardinal offense against San Diego State, netting two unassisted goals and single-handedly putting the Cardinal up 2-0 in the first half. Her first goal came in the 16th minute, when she dribbled up and sent in a hard drive from the middle. Six minutes later, Summers scored a second unassisted goal, putting away a rebound off her own shot.
The first goal against SDSU was Summers' fourth game-winner of the season, top in the Pac-10. With a conference-best six goals this year, Summers has more than doubled her career goal total of five coming into the season in just her first nine games.
The honor was the second for Summers this season and the second of her career, as the Canyon Country, Calif. native was also honored on Sept. 5 for her pair of game-winners against San Francisco and Cal Poly. Stanford now has 17 all-time Player of the Week winners. Summers becomes the first Cardinal player to ever win the award twice in the same season.
Stanford heads to No. 3 Santa Clara this weekend, and will attempt to extend a three-game winning streak and upset the Broncos for the second-straight time.
