Bears Start All-American Championships on Winning Note

Oct. 3, 2006

LOS ANGELES - The California women's tennis competed in the first two rounds of the Riviera/ITA All-American Championships Tuesday at the Riviera Tennis Club. Three Golden Bears participated in the qualifying tournament, and junior Cristina Visico advanced to the third round.

Visico opened the tournament with a victory over Utah's Elizabeth Ferris, 6-4, 6-3. In the second round, she knocked off Danielle Steinberg of Arizona, 3-6, 6-3, 6-2.

In third round action on Wednesday, Visico takes on Kellie Schmitt of Marshall. A victory over Schmitt will propel Visico into the main draw of the event.

The fall 2006 season has been a successful campaign for Visico thus far. She came into the championships riding the momentum from winning the blue singles tournament at the Cal Invitational last weekend.

In other singles action, junior Stephanie Kusano won her first match of the day, knocking off Sarah Fansler of USC, 6-2, 0-6, 6-4. She fell in round two to Jenna Long of North Carolina, 2-6, 6-4, 1-6.

Junior Marion Ravelojaona lost her first round match to Oklahoma's Gaby Baker, 4-6, 6-7 (4).
